Since its formation, Hong Leong has upheld the philosophy of giving back to society. In 1980, the Hong Leong Foundation was formed as the main driver of the Group’s philanthropic initiatives. Its aim is to create opportunities for Singapore to grow and develop by fostering education, helping the elderly and needy to lead fulfilling, healthy and active lives, as well as supporting culture and the arts.
Over the past 30 years, the Group has carried out annual cash giveaways for the needy elderly living in Singapore’s heartland areas. Donations are given away annually to the needy and charities supporting various causes.
While the Foundation provides financial support, the commitment to pay it forward is carried by its employees, whose dedication and commitment forms the backbone of the Foundation, and permeates through the Group’s subsidiaries.
The City Sunshine Club, an employee volunteer platform under CDL conducts monthly visits to needy elderly who live in 1-bedroom public housing apartments. Besides offering them the basic necessities, the volunteers befriend them, extending friendship and care. The Club also organises outreach and mentoring programmes for children and youth development.
Over at Hong Leong Holdings, employees participate in monthly food distribution programmes across Singapore, personally delivering food packs to needy families identified by the Lion’s Befrienders in Singapore.
In May 2008, the Group’s hotel arm Millennium & Copthorne Hotels plc, responded to the call for help and made a donation towards the rebuilding of the Wolong Primary School, which was destroyed during the devastating Sichuan earthquake. Millennium & Copthorne Hotels plc has also organised other relief efforts for natural disasters such as the Japan tsunami in 2011 and Superstorm Sandy in 2012.
Hong Leong Asia provides training and scholarship programmes for needy students in China keen on fostering their talent in engineering.
